Consultation on the European Pillar of Social Rights

 

Following President Jean-Claude Juncker’s announcement on the establishment of a European Pillar of Social Rights in September 2015, the European Commission has taken concrete steps to push forward for a fair and truly pan-European labour market. A public consultation is ongoing until the end of this year and its ultimate goal is to stimulate feedback from other European institutions, national authorities and parliaments, social partners, stakeholders, civil society, experts from academia and citizens. Furthermore, the consultation is to make an assessment of the present EU social “acquis”, to reflect new trends in work patterns and societies and to gather views and feedback on the principles identified in a preliminary outline of the Pillar. A Consultation Session on the European Pillar of Social Rights was organized by the European Commission Representation in Malta, Friday 2 September 2016. The Consumer Association Malta on behalf of Civil Society put forward a number of recommendations. General Comment: Gender issues, social rights, health care and persons at risk of poverty were some of the topics that should be addressed horizontally in all 20 topics of the Proposed Social Pillar.
